CARLY Ryan's mother has refused to surrender to despair, vowing to dedicate her life to saving others from the fate that befell her murdered daughter.
Speaking for the first time since the teenager's killer was convicted, Sonya Ryan said urgent action, such as compulsory seminars for Year 8 students, was needed to educate children about internet dangers.
Ms Ryan, 38, also threw her support behind new federal laws, proposed by independent senator Nick Xenophon, that would make lying to children on the internet a crime.
Yesterday, Ms Ryan told The Advertiser her focus "had to be" on the future, not the past.
"A future without Carly is just too terrifying to imagine, like someone switched off the light that she brought into our lives," she said. "You can either fall into that blackness and completely give up or you step into the light and do what you can - and that's trying to help others.
"What else is there? It's pretty much the only choice I have. If I have to be here without Carly, then my aim is to help create awareness."
On January 21, Ms Ryan sat in the back row of the Supreme Court and watched as a jury found a Victorian man guilty of murdering her 15-year-old daughter.
It was the first time she had seen the 50-year-old since she kicked him out of her home three years earlier.
At that time, she had believed the man's name was Shane and that he was the adopted father of Miss Ryan's internet boyfriend, Brandon Kane.
In truth, both "Brandon" and "Shane" were personas the man had adopted to seduce Miss Ryan into a sexual relationship.
Ms Ryan ordered "Shane" to leave her home after finding him sleeping in the same bed as her daughter.
Weeks later, the man would use his cyberspace alter ego to convince Miss Ryan to go with him to Port Elliot, where he bashed and drowned her.
"Carly would be utterly horrified to know the level of deception of that man," Ms Ryan said yesterday.
"A lot of people believe whatever they read on the internet is true, especially children . . . they believe what they see, but there is just so much deception out there and on so many levels.
"All it takes is for a trusting teen to believe what a predator is saying to them and their safety is instantly taken out of their hands.
"Carly was a very compassionate young lady and she would be wanting all of us to do whatever we can to stop this happening again in the future to another young girl."
Ms Ryan said parents had to educate themselves about the internet.
"I think that parents are unaware of what their children are doing online," she said. "They need to be more actively involved and checking their children's websites, looking at the mediums they are using, checking their profiles and who they are speaking to."
Teachers and governments, she said, had to work together to warn children about online predators. "Kids put whatever they like on their MySpace and Facebook pages - their schools, their telephone numbers, their movements - just completely unaware that anybody can look at that information," she said.
"The internet is getting bigger and bigger, and this problem is only going to get worse - something needs to be actively done and people need to start taking this seriously.
"I think there should be compulsory school seminars on internet awareness and safety for Year 8 students."
Ms Ryan said she would create a foundation, in her daughter's name, to further internet awareness and child safety. She called on the public to contact her with suggestions and initiatives.
"There has been enough suffering over the past three years," she said. "Not just for me but for Carly's family, her friends, the lady who found her on the beach, the police and the prosecutors.
"Now, the best thing I can do is get out there and try to help others prevent this happening in the future.
"I just try to always think `What would Carly want me to do?' and I know, in my heart of hearts, that is getting this message out . . ."

Be yourself!

Yesterday, I got the chance to read a magazine but I can't remember what magazine it is. I read the letter to counsellor segment. It is quite interesting. There was a man who wrote that he is so confused with himself and he afraid that he don't know himself well which make him unable to predict what he will be in future. He also told that all of his friends know what they are doing and what they will be in future. But, when he looks to himself, he still blur about why on earth he still exist in this world. He said that he seems to be losing his self-esteem.


Then, the counsellor answered him by saying that it is normal for a human - wanting to know what the future holds and how our lives will turn out is a human obsession. It is a fact that most of people know what they want and they aim for it and they can know what they will be next. But, there are still several people who still in their searching mode of their hidden talent. All that we need is time to discover what we are good at. Some person know their talent since they was a child. However, not everyone is like that. It is a part of journey of discovering what we are good at. Just have to believe that everyone has a special talent.


For me, the best thing to know yourself is be yourself. Being yourself is celebrating you, as an individual - learning to express yourself and be happy with who you are. For some people, it's learning to love yourself, for others, it's not hiding who you are or changing things about you to fit in. If you can do it, you will realize within no time what things that are you enjoy in doing it and have a great passion in it.

Wow!

It been a very looooong time that I never open my blog. I can see that most of my friends are updating their blog regularly. Well, it is a fact that I'm not a type of person who likes to write. I'm really not so into this thing. And now, our Ms. Dil had asked us to maintain our blog. Then, that is what I'm doing now.

Still searching for more articles on the National Bureau Services or more familiar with the name of BTN (Biro Tatanegara). Is BTN benefecial to the person who went for it? Last year, it had been a debate on this matter. Currently, 2 states in Malaysia, Selangor and Penang, had ban it. Actually, this programme is made compulsory for any Malaysian student who are going to study abroad. But, people had argued that this programmes only promoted racism and hatred. And, it has to be stop before our nation unity become worse.

I find that it is difficult to find the articles about it in the magazine. But, fortunately, I managed to find it in the newspaper. So, after this, internet!!!! lol...

We cannot deny right, that most student prefer to search information in the internet rather than going through all the book which you need to read one by one. Ok, then. Hope that I am able to find all 15++ required articles for this topic. If you have any suggestion regarding this topic, feel free to leave a comment.

LIAR GAME

Just taking a break for a while before continue reading MPW..

The exam is just around the corner.. But I know I'm still not fully prepared for it..

So scared... Hope I can give my best in the paper.. Gambate qila! ^^

This afternoon I had watched a japanese drama together with my friends. It was an interesting story. It really needs us to understand the plot of the story really well. It is actually about how a swindler [a person who trick somebody to get their money] teached a very honest person or in my hometown they called this type of person as 'lurus bendul' how to cheat others in order to avoid from being deceived. The person is a girl who is too good for herself. She always be kind to others so she is easily being fooled by her friends.

Matsuda Shota played the role as the swindler in this drama and he looks really cool... First time I watch his acting in the Hana Yori Dango drama. Well, in that drama, HNY, he just played the side actor. But, in this drama.. Ops, wait a minute.. I think I didn't mention the title of the story yet right? Hehe.. So sorry.. Well, the title of the story is LIAR GAME. The winner of this game will be announced as the 'King of Liar' and of course the winner will be rewarded with a big sum of money. Back to my incomplete sentence, in this drama he played the main actor named Akiyama Shinichi. He is really genius in the story where he managed to read people mind and observed people's behaviour really well to guess what they will do next. It was really fantastic!

I think the credits should be given to the script writer and the director. They are really brilliant to come out with such a complicated and tricky concept in the story line. Wow!

Well, we still haven't finished watching the drama yet. Still got the final episode to go. But, we had to stop first because my friend still not finished downloading the last episode. Cannot wait to see the ending.. Who will get the title 'King of Liar'? and I think the most important is just want to know exactly why such game was organize? Can't wait to see it!

POST [A]

Just finished searching MIDI songs. It was really a tiring jobs to do. ~.~
Actually, we need to do our own website by using front page. Talking about ourselves there, our family and a little bit about our education background. I just trying to make as simple as I can. Really don't want to think too much complicated into that.

Well, lately I see that a lot of my friends always update their blog. Certain of them I can say that quite everyday they will post something to their blog. Good for them but.. Hey, what had happened to me??? Qila, please wake up!!! After the Raya post I never open my blog ever.. Bad me... =(
So, today I want to post something. And this is it. Yeah...!

Just want to say here that this week I'm going home!!! Hoho..
And... I will be back to INTI the next tuesday which means the monday is a holiday for me.. ^^

Actually, I have reason behind it. I want to send my parents to the airport. They are going to Mekah to perform Hajj [ : an obligation that must be carried out at least once in lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so]. They will be there about 45 days. So, around early of december then they will come back to Malaysia.

Fortunately, it is the end of the year. So, most of my siblings will have the semester break. So, we can take care of our youngest sister who are just in standard 2. I really don't know whether she can stand to live without my parents for about a month and a half. Hope she won't miss them too much. Btw, my parents had promise that they will call her everyday. So sweet..

Hope that their pilgrimage there will go on without any difficulties. Amen... God bless them..

Hello! It's been a long time since I never post anything to my blog. Btw, first thing is I would to wish "Selamat Hari Raya" to all my muslims' friends. May they forgive me for all my wrong doings which I had done to them before.

Well, Hari Raya is the most joyous occasion for Muslims. As a brief explanation, Muslims starts the day by wearing new clothes and congregating in the mosques early in the morning to perform Hari Raya Puasa prayers followed by visiting the graves of the departed. The young will ask for forgiveness from their elders and have open house for relatives and friends to come to their house. Plenty of traditional Malay delicacies are served during this festive season. Houses are thoroughly cleaned and decorated, and lighting of oil lamps welcomes the angels which are believed to be visiting the earth during the seven days preceding the festival.

The celebration lasts for a month but most of the celebration is concentrated in the first three days. Visiting Muslim homes on Hari Raya Puasa, you can expect to taste a wide variety of delicious spicy dishes. Some favorite dishes that can be found in Muslims homes on this special occasion are ketupat, lontong, nasi padang and beef rendang. The Muslims also give packets of money to kids when they go visiting. The packets are usually green in colour and children often look forward to getting these money tokens on Hari Raya Puasa.

This year, my family got colour theme for our 'baju raya' on this special day which is GREEN. Here are some pictures of us before going for the raya's prayer.

As a means of celebrating the Raya day, quite every year my family will make the ketupat. I means 'anyam ketupat'. Usually around 100 of ketupat. And, just want to say here that I am quite excellent in making the 'sarong ketupat'. =p

My moms cooked a lot for the day besides ketupat, such as 'rendang ayam', 'kuah kacang', 'kuah lodeh' and don't forget about the cookies. I really enjoying myself with all the food. lol.. As a result, my weight had increased quite a lot even only after the first day of Raya and this means I really need to have a strict diet when I went back to INTI to reduce my weight as before-well, fasting is the best way.

Although this time I did not get as much money as I get before-haha..., as I went back to INTI I really miss my home. I wish I could stay more longer at home. Just watch the television and telling jokes with my siblings. *sigh* -singing the 'Selamat Hari Raya' by Saloma. ^^

What a tiring day! T.T

Guess what, today my roommate, Kathy and I went out at 11 in the morning and just coming back to INTI around 11p.m! We went for shopping in Mid. Hehe.. Looks like a shopaholic right? No lah.. we just want to have some new outfits for the coming Raya Day. Actually, I want to find a new shoes and my roommate just want to look around. But, at the end I didn't bought any shoes. Maybe I will just buy it with my mom next week as I will go back home next weak. Yeah! ^^ Mid really doesn't have many shoes' shop. Don't you think so? Melaka is better. lol.. -melaka is my hometown.

Just don't want to make my visit-can I call it a visit?; to Mid a waste, I bought 2 shirts in Carrefour. There, Jusco is having a kind of Megasale as Raya is just around the corner. A lot of people in the store and of course most of them are woman. =p But, I don't know why I didn't buy any shirts there. The price offers is quite cheap-discount 10%, 50% and even 70%. Kathy had bought herself shirts there. Pink colour you know. =)

The time to break our fast was really an interesting moment. At first, we decide to have it in KFC. However, when we arrived there... OMG! It had already fulled with people. A long queue to order the food and even the queue was until outside of the shop. It really shocked me. =( Then, we went to top floor where the food court is located. And the same scenario there. All the tables were fulled. Not even a single chair were available to sit on. Once again we look around to find any food shops with free tables. But, it was really sad because most of the tables in the restaurant had been reserved. So, we really had no idea on how to break our fast. Then, we decided to buy some bread and performed our solah first. And after that we plan to go to KFC to have a meal-hoping that less people are left. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the surau, there was a long queue to go inside the surau. Oh, man! another long queue. Huhu.. After thinking for a while, we decided to take ablution in the toilet and straightly cut the long queue to perform the solah.. Thanks God! Things really went well. And we also succeed to have a meal in KFC. Yeah! at last.. =) Then, we straightly went back.

On the way back, we met with some AUP students. They also went shopping but in Jalan India-if i'm not mistaken. Then, we realised we are not the only one who come back late. Still in the bus, we met another senior who went to Mid also but we never encounter each other. lol.. -is it Mid reallly that big?

After having those all tiring day, now I'm writing it in my blog just to share my experience with others. The lessons is if you want to break fast in a mall, better for you to reserve the place first. Yes, that the main important lesson! Haha..
